ASTATOS

Videogame (2021)

Developer: Studio Klondike

Astatos is a narrative-driven card-battling adventure where gods, heroes, and the complexity of human nature collide. This unique game blends the strategic depth of card combat with a rich, story-driven experience that explores the impact of personal choices on both oneself and others.

I composed the original soundtrack of the game blending ancient Middle Eastern influences with modern cinematic tones.

Behind-the-Scenes of the Music Process

The music for Astatos was created to reflect the game’s unique mix of storytelling and card-based strategy. The goal was to bring together ancient and modern sounds, blending Middle Eastern influences with cinematic elements to create a score that feels both immersive and approachable. The soundtrack was designed to immerse players in the mythological undertones of the game, whether they’re exploring the narrative or diving into a tense battle.

To achieve this sound, I collaborated with Sandro Friedrich, a specialist in ethnic woodwinds, whose mastery brought authenticity and depth to the score. Instruments such as the kaval, duduk, and bass duduk were integral in evoking a sense of ancient mysticism and grounding the music in its cultural inspirations.

The music also incorporates adaptive techniques. By utilizing modular layers and transitions, the score shifts seamlessly to match the pace and intensity of the gameplay, such as the escalation of tension during card duels or the calm, reflective moments in narrative scenes.

All tracks, with the exception of "Guiding Light" (produced by Adapt 9), were mixed and produced by me, with the final mastering handled by Mario Carnerero.
